Deel 1 – De yama’s

De meesten van ons denken bij yoga vooral aan fysieke beoefening.
Maar hoe gaan we om met andere mensen en de omgeving en hoe gaan we om met onze problemen vanuit het perspectief van yoga?

Heb je je ooit anders gedragen thuis met je geliefden, op het werk of met je vrienden?

Misschien zijn we op het werk geduldig en zelfbeheerst en verliezen we thuis snel ons humeur.
Of we zijn supervriendelijk met onze vrienden en humeurig met onze familieleden.

Onze houding en ons gedrag beïnvloeden ons leven en dat van anderen.

Volgens de traditie van Patanjali zijn er vijf gedragspatronen, Yamas genaamd, die sereniteit en vrede kunnen brengen als ze deel gaan uitmaken van ons dagelijks leven.

1. Ahimsa

Geen kwaad: geen andere levende wezens of zichzelf pijn doen.
Geweld plegen is niet alleen iemand doden of in het gezicht slaan.

We plegen ook geweld als we niet op de juiste manier recyclen, niet goed voor onze gezondheid zorgen, een masker dragen of afstand houden tijdens de pandemie en onaardige woorden zeggen.

2. Satya

Waarachtigheid: we moeten nadenken over wat we zeggen, hoe we het zeggen en op welke manier het anderen zou kunnen beïnvloeden – niet liegen, niet roddelen, integer handelen.

3. Asteya

Niet stelen: niet iets nemen wat niet van ons is.
Als we bijvoorbeeld altijd te laat komen op onze afspraken of misbruik maken van de vrijgevigheid van iemand anders, dan beoefenen we geen asteya (niet stelen).

4. Brahmacarya

Het juiste gebruik van energie: het gevoel onze energie weg te leiden van externe verlangens en vrede en geluk in onszelf te vinden.

Veel energie wordt waarschijnlijk besteed om anderen te behagen of te imponeren, om dingen te doen die ons niet echt dienen.

Om de beste versie van onszelf te zijn en de energie goed te gebruiken, moeten we eerst luisteren naar wat ons lichaam nodig heeft.
Crazy busy blijkt een terugkerende mantra te zijn.

De vraag is: wat doen we de moeite waard?
Hoe voelen we ons van binnen met onze drukke agenda?
Onszelf uitputten met mensen en dagelijkse taken die onszelf niet bevallen is niet het antwoord.

5. Aparigraha

De kans niet grijpen: we moeten alleen nemen wat nodig is en geen misbruik maken van een situatie.

Als we meer nemen dan we legitiem verdiend hebben, gebruiken we iemand anders.
Het gaat ook over het loslaten van materiële bezittingen en het omarmen van de verandering die de enige constante in ons leven is.

Het vergt zeker veel kracht om deze principes te volgen, maar hoe meer vertrouwen we in dit pad hebben, hoe meer energie we hebben om onze doelen na te streven.

Deze vijf morele principes en hoe we ze in ons dagelijks leven kunnen toepassen, moeten altijd vanuit een groter perspectief worden bekeken.

We moeten in elke situatie weloverwogen gedrag vertonen.
Het is cruciaal om principes te hebben en deze na te leven, zolang deze principes het gezond verstand niet vertroebelen.

We moeten altijd onderzoek doen naar onze daden en gedachten en niet blindelings de regels volgen omdat iemand ons dat opdroeg.
