Het onderwerp is erg breed en een blogpost is niet voldoende om diep in te gaan en alle vragen te beantwoorden, maar hopelijk geeft het je wat basiskennis en de input om door te gaan met het verkennen en bestuderen van dit eeuwenoude en krachtige zelfgenezingssysteem.

Ayurveda en de betekenis

Het woord Ayurveda komt uit het Sanskriet en betekent “wetenschap van het leven”.
Ayu betekent “leven” of “dagelijks leven”, en Veda is “weten”.

Het is de kennis over hoe je in het dagelijks leven gezond kunt blijven en het wordt beschouwd als de oudste bekende vorm van gezondheidszorg ter wereld.

Ayurveda werd voor het eerst beschreven in de Veda’s, de oudste laag van de Sanskrietliteratuur en de oudste geschriften van het hindoeïsme.

Dit holistische geneeswijze systeem is naast Yoga in India ontwikkeld.
Het doel is om gezondheid te bereiken door te werken aan balans en harmonie met de natuur.

De drie-eenheid van het leven

Ayurveda, Yoga en Tantra zijn eeuwenoude levensdisciplines die al eeuwenlang in India worden beoefend.

Yoga is de wetenschap van de vereniging van het Goddelijke met Waarheid, Tantra is de methode om de energie te beheersen die de vereniging met Waarheid tot stand brengt en Ayurveda is de wetenschap van het leven die door iedereen beoefend kan worden om een goede gezondheid te bereiken.

Het doel van elke beoefening is om het individu te helpen een lang leven te leiden, te verjongen en zichzelf te realiseren.

Volgens Dr. Vasant Lad, al meer dan 50 jaar beoefenaar en professor in de Ayurvedische Geneeskunde, is Ayurveda de basis, Yoga het lichaam en Tantra het hoofd.

Ze vormen een onderling afhankelijke drie-eenheid van het leven, wat betekent dat onze gezondheid afhangt van de beoefening van deze drie.

De vijf elementen

In het begin bestond de wereld in een ongemanifesteerde staat van bewustzijn, een energie die zich manifesteerde in vijf elementen: Ether, Lucht, Vuur, Water en Aarde.

Vanuit die staat manifesteerden zich de subtiele trillingen van het kosmische geluid ‘aum’ en vanuit die trilling verscheen voor het eerst het element Ether.
Ether ontstond uit Lucht en Vuur, vanwege zijn beweging en wrijving.

Uit Vuur werden bepaalde elementen vloeibaar en ontstond het element Water, dat vervolgens stolde en de moleculen van de Aarde vormde.

Uit de Aarde werden alle organische levende wezens en anorganische stoffen geschapen.

Deze vijf basiselementen bestaan in alle materie, en omdat ze voortkwamen uit Kosmisch Bewustzijn, zijn energie en materie één.

In ons lichaam komen de vijf elementen overeen met onze vijf zintuigen:

  • Ether is gerelateerd aan het gehoor → het zintuig is het oor en het drukt zich uit via spraak.
  • Lucht is gerelateerd aan de tastzin → het zintuig is de huid en het actieorgaan is de hand.
  • Vuur is gerelateerd aan zien → het zintuig en het actieorgaan zijn de ogen.
  • Water is gerelateerd aan het smaakorgaan → het zintuig is de tong.
  • Aarde heeft te maken met reukzin → het zintuig is de neus.

Als deze elementen in balans zijn, ervaren we een harmonieuze relatie met het kosmische bewustzijn, en dat is het doel van Ayurveda.

Het Tridosha Systeem

De vijf elementen manifesteren zich in het menselijk lichaam via drie fundamentele energieën of principes die het functioneren van ons lichaam op fysiek en emotioneel niveau bepalen.

Elk individu heeft een unieke balans van alle drie deze energieën.
Bij sommige mensen overheerst er één, terwijl anderen een mengeling van twee of meer zijn.

Als ze uit balans zijn, dragen ze bij aan het veroorzaken van ziekten.

Volgens Ayurveda is de eerste vereiste voor genezing het begrijpen van het tridosha-systeem.

Vata

Vata Dosha bestaat uit lucht en ether.
Het regelt de ademhaling, het knipperen van de oogleden, bewegingen in de spieren en weefsels en alle uitzetting en inkrimping.

Vata beheerst ook gevoelens zoals nervositeit, angst en pijn.
Mensen met een Vata constitutie hebben een licht lichaam, dunne botten, een droge huid en droog haar.

Ze bewegen en spreken vaak snel.
Als ze uit balans zijn, kunnen ze gewicht verliezen, constipatie krijgen en een zwak immuunsysteem en zenuwstelsel hebben.

Ze zijn meestal spraakzaam, enthousiast, creatief, flexibel en energiek.
Maar als ze uit balans zijn, kunnen ze ook snel verward en overweldigd raken, moeite hebben met focussen en beslissingen nemen, en moeite hebben met slapen.

Dit wordt duidelijker als ze onder stress staan.
Emotioneel worden ze uitgedaagd door koele emoties zoals zorgen, angst en bezorgdheid.

Pitta

Pitta Dosha bestaat uit vuur en water, waarbij vuur meer overheerst.
Het regelt de spijsvertering, absorptie, assimilatie, voeding, stofwisseling, intelligentie en begrip.

Mensen met een Pitta-constitutie voelen meestal warm aan en hebben een enigszins vette huid, doordringende ogen en scherpe gelaatstrekken.
Ze hebben meestal een gemiddeld gewicht en goede spieren.

Als ze uit balans zijn, neigen ze naar diarree, infecties, huiduitslag en zwakte in de lever, milt en bloed.

Ze zijn erg intelligent en scherpzinnig en hebben de neiging goede redenaars te zijn.
Ze hebben emotionele neigingen tot haat, woede en jaloezie.

Kapha

Kapha Dosha bestaat uit water en aarde.
Het onderhoudt de weerstand van het lichaam, het geeft biologische kracht, vitaliteit en stabiliteit.

Mensen met een Kapha constitutie hebben zware botten, een lage stofwisseling en een groot, gedrongen postuur.
Als Kapha mensen uit balans zijn, hebben ze de neiging om aan te komen en hebben ze zwakke plekken in hun longen en sinussen waar zich slijm ophoopt.

De zware, stabiele aard van Kapha weerspiegelt een stabiele persoonlijkheid die niet gevoelig is voor snelle schommelingen.
Mensen met een Kapha-natuur kunnen heel goed met stress omgaan en hebben vaak niet eens door dat ze stress hebben.

Ze houden niet van verandering, zijn over het algemeen conservatief en houden de dingen liever zoals ze zijn.

We zijn allemaal een combinatie van de drie doshische energieën.
Pitta is onze stofwisseling, Kapha is onze structuur en Vata is de beweeglijkheid die actie en leven in de schepping brengt.
Zonder deze drie energieën zouden we simpelweg niet kunnen bestaan.

Ayurveda en yoga

In India worden Ayurveda en Yoga beschouwd als zusterwetenschappen.
Je studeert eerst Ayurveda omdat het de wetenschap van het lichaam is, en pas als het lichaam fit is, ben je klaar om de spirituele wetenschap van yoga te bestuderen.

De voordelen van yoga-oefeningen helpen de neurohormonen en het metabolisme in balans te brengen en verbeteren het endocriene metabolisme, waardoor je sterker wordt tegen stress.

Asana’s en bewegingen bewegen energieën die zich hebben opgehoopt en gestagneerd in de energiecentra, dus op basis van onze constitutie en onevenwichtigheden geeft Ayurveda aan welk type yoga geschikt is voor elke persoon.

Een Pitta-persoon zou bijvoorbeeld geen hoofdstand langer dan een minuut uitvoeren, anders kan hij last krijgen van mentale desoriëntatie.

Een Vata persoon moet niet langdurig schouderstanden uitvoeren omdat deze houding te veel gewicht op de zevende halswervel legt, die erg gevoelig is, en de delicate botstructuur van Vata kan een verschuiving in de wervelkolom veroorzaken.

Een Kapha persoon zou de verborgen lotushouding niet voor langere tijd moeten aannemen, omdat de houding directe druk op de bijnieren veroorzaakt.

BTWA in evenwicht brengen tijdens het herfstseizoen

Elk seizoen heeft een overheersende dosha, en de herfst verzamelt alle kwaliteiten van Vata: de bladeren aan de bomen beginnen uit te drogen en het weer wordt kouder en winderiger.

We beginnen ons kouder en minder geaard te voelen en onze huid en haren worden droger, zelfs als Vata niet onze overheersende constitutie is.

Om ons geaard en in balans te houden kunnen we kleine rituelen toevoegen aan onze dagelijkse routine en ons richten op meer geaarde asana.

1. Vermijd stimulerend eten en drinken zoals pure pure chocolade, koffie, zwarte thee en andere cafeïnerijke voedingsmiddelen omdat ze het zenuwstelsel, het systeem van Vata, opblazen.
Drink in plaats daarvan kalmerende drankjes zoals kamillethee, lavendelthee en verse gemberthee.
2. Geef dagelijks een massage met warme sesamolie voordat je gaat douchen.
3. Draag rijke en warme kleuren, rood, geel en oranje.
Verbrand verwarmende, aardende, zoete parfumoliën (zoals lavendel).
4. Beweeg langzamer, praat langzamer, eet langzamer en doe één ding tegelijk, vermijd multitasking.
Beoefen langzame Nadi Shodhana pranayama en langzame opwarmende yoga asana’s die aardend en versterkend werken in een warme ruimte.
Herstellende yoga, Shavasana en Yoga Nidra worden aanbevolen.
